This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a newer (6 years young) public school in Brooklyn, New York, we service students from various backgrounds. All of the families in our school believe in the importance of community and working together towards a common goal. After working as a classroom teacher for the last 15 years, I have begun a new journey as the Wellness teacher at our school. This position allows me to teach 400 students each week as we learn about the various ways to keep our minds and bodies healthy.

Thankfully, I have flexibility in my schedule to also work with students who require targeted reading intervention in order to reach their potential.

As many can attest, teachers are life-long learners and strive to learn the best practices for instruction. It is also widely known that teachers don't have access to all of the resources they need to teach their students well.

My Project

My students require specialized reading instruction. Their beautiful brains are quite unique and do not benefit from typical literacy instruction. These children need to be explicitly taught the rules of the English language in a multisensory way.

These resources will provide students with words and sentences that follow the rules we're learning each day.

Since these packs are scaffolded for each rule, students will finally feel successful as readers! They will be able to practice the new rule while maintaining a spiral review of the words, syllables, prefixes, suffixes, and rules we've previously learned. The Phonics Card Set 1-3 will focus on beginning blends, vowel sounds, syllable divisions, and diphthongs. Set 4 includes the Three Great Spelling rules and Anglo-Saxon prefixes and suffixes. Latin Card Set 1-3 provides examples for Latin prefixes, roots, and suffixes. The Salmon, Yellow, White deck allows students to make spelling a cognitive process. These word decks will enhance my students' learning experience and will help me become a better-prepared pedagogue.
