My Project
We are seeking funding to establish a New Latin American History class at our high school, designed to provide our majority Latin student population with a deeper and more accurate understanding of their own histories—histories that are often marginalized in traditional curricula. This course will be closely integrated with our Anthropology class, offering students an interdisciplinary approach to studying the Indigenous cultures, colonial legacies, and ongoing cultural transformations of Latin America. One of our key hands-on projects will involve creating Inka Khipu using jute rope, allowing students to engage with Andean record-keeping traditions firsthand. By incorporating material culture alongside historical texts, we aim to foster critical thinking, cultural pride, and historical literacy among our students.
Funding for essential resources, we are asking for books that cover Indigenous histories, colonial encounters, and pre-Columbian codices, as well as supplies for hands-on learning experiences.
Specifically a selection of key texts such as A History of Indigenous Latin America, Bernardino de Sahagún: First Anthropologist, and facsimiles of the Dresden Codex and Codex Borgia. Additionally, we seek jute twine for our Khipu project, allowing students to physically engage with Indigenous methods of knowledge preservation. Alongside, we are requesting an Apple Pencil Pro to enhance digital annotation and engagement with historical sources. These materials will provide an invaluable opportunity for students to explore Latin American history beyond conventional narratives, fostering a richer, more inclusive educational experience. We appreciate your consideration of this request and look forward to the opportunity to bring this vital program to life.
