Our city has wonderful diversity. We are a Title I school with about 35% of students speaking only English, 35% speaking Spanish as a first language, and 30% speaking Marshallese. Our district has one of the highest number of Marshallese students in the nation. Over 88% of students at my school receive free and/or reduced-price lunch. As the school's reading specialist, I have received training in the Science of Reading for students with characteristics of dyslexia. I am asking for teacher resources that the trainer recommended during this training.
There are over 60 students in grades 2-5 at our school who are more than a year behind in reading.
Many have markers for dyslexia or are missing important reading skills. The Science of Reading training I received recommended particular teacher texts that layout an explicit, systematic phonics program. One of the texts shows how to make reading comprehension visible using kinesthetic and tactile methods, which are important for students with dyslexia.
My Project
These teacher resources lay out explicit systematic phonics instruction and comprehension instruction specific to students who have markers for dyslexia. Students who struggle need tactile ways to practice words. The glass dry erase board allows students to trace anything that is put beneath it. Students can write with various colored backgrounds in a unique, visual, and memorable way.
The Science of Reading research shows struggling readers must have explicit, systematic phonics instruction where students master skills before moving on.
The resources in this project are recommended by Science of Reading researchers as being effective systematic instruction. We do not have these resources at our school. I can't wait to use them with my students!!
