My students need reading materials they are excited about! Scholastic magazines make our kids want to read! We also need basic supplies, such as paper, bins, and white boards.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We often hear that teaching 7th grade or teaching Special Education must be such a challenge. This work absolutely is a challenge, but in a way that we love. Our kids need a lot of support, both academically and emotionally. We feel fortunate to be able to be a big part of that support.
Two years ago, my co-teacher and I decided that we wanted to combine our loves of English and Social Studies into a 7th grade Humanities curriculum that would meet the needs of all of our Special and General Education students.
We teach over 60 7th grade students. Many of them have special needs (learning disabilities, ADHD, emotional disturbances, physical disabilities, etc.). We also teach many students who are English Language Learners and have come here from China, Pakistan, Yemen, or Bangladesh. They have only been living in America for a few years. Our classes are melting pots of race, religion, language, ethnicity and custom. We feel privileged to learn from our students every day. We also feel pretty lucky to be able to teach them reading, writing and history.
My Project
We are envisioning a classroom that has the basic supplies that our kids deserve (paper, markers, folders, colorful charts, art supplies, etc.). But we are also dreaming about materials that truly enrich our students' learning experiences. We want our kids to know how much their education matters, not only to them, but to the rest of the world. Reading issues of Scholastic Scope or Junior Scholastic that were donated by other people who care about their education will teach our kids that we are all collectively invested in their success. For our students who struggle with auditory processing, vivid visual representations of the Revolutionary War or the Jamestown Colony will transform their learning. We want to have the kind of classroom that kids are excited to step into. All of the materials we have requested will help make this happen.
Many of our students struggle to afford basic supplies they need to stay organized.
White boards will ensure that all students are participating during a read aloud. Markers will allow them to create stunning comic strips of Columbus' first "encounter" with the Taino people. Clipboards will enable us to pull kids in small groups to work on reading comprehension skills. Your donations will level the playing field for our kids and will supply them with the tools they need to succeed. Thank you!
