Teaching students to write is a beautiful challenge!!! Our 9th grade, English I students are on the verge of beginning their major research project for the school year. This project will teach our students how to effectively research, how to compose their ideas, and how to use technology as a resource. These are foundational skills as these 9th grade students begin their high school careers!!
This small, rural community in Texas has incredible students and families...but very few resources. Students often have to complete research on the school campus, due to the fact that they do not have access to computers at home. They are limited by time, and often find that the hard work that they have completed has been lost or discarded on the school's "network." Learning how to write is such a difficult task, especially if a student continually runs into obstacles!
Each year our English I students read the fantastic novel, "Fallen Angels," written by Walter Dean Myers. This novel about the Vietnam War hits close to home in this loyal, patriotic community in small-town Texas.
This year we have decided to compile a research project composed of a compelling and complex topic (the Vietnam War)and a fantastic novel ("Fallen Angels"). As our students begin to research and write on this project, they need a safe place that they can store the work that they have completed. My students need a class set of flash drives (25) to successfully compile a thorough research project on the Vietnam War alongside their reading of "Fallen Angels."
Through your donation you will empower our students to research and compose with confidence and pride. They will not feel limited by time constraints or fear that their writing will be discarded on a "network." This compelling research project topic will allow us to teach our students how to use technology, effective research skills, and make them better writers as they progress through high school and on in to college. Thank you very much for your help!!!
