This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Many of my students do not have the background knowledge they need in order to live healthy, active lives. Between poor food choices and limited time spent engaging in sport and fitness activities, many of my students are on their way to living unhealthy lives. I want to help change that for them!

I teach 5th grade at an urban, high poverty school in North Carolina.

The majority of our students are economically disadvantaged and receive free and reduced lunch. While we started the school year with about 75% of my students working below grade level, they continue to make positive academic gains. My students have made some great academic strides but they need to keep growing in order to reach their end of year goals that we have put in place for them and for ourselves.

My Project

I am requesting a Samsung Chromebook to be used for research relating to getting active. Studies have shown that when students have an outlet to release their energy that they will perform better in school. I would like them to complete research projects relating to a topic that interests them within the theme of sports and fitness. I know that these projects will inspire my students to make choices that will positively impact their lives and the lives of their families for many years to come.

This project will make a difference because it will not only impact my students' academics, it will impact their health!

They will be able to spend time reading about health and fitness and then create a plan for themselves so that they can work towards living healthy lives. The habits they start now can follow them for the rest of their lives and I want those habits to be positive ones!
