Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My fifth grade students are enthusiastic bilingual students. They are a group of diverse learners who are eager to learn and in engage in the world around them.
My students are first and second generation Latino students living in a vibrant low-income and working class neighborhood in Chicago.
Our school is a large, public neighborhood school dedicated to a bright future for our students. However, limited funding results in fewer resources and opportunities for our students. For my literacy-centered classroom, this means fewer books.
My Project
I believe that the best way to engage students in nonfiction reading and research is to give them access to books about engaging topics. All of my students deserve access to nonfiction texts about topics that they care about.
My students currently have limited access to nonfiction texts, particularly nonfiction texts related to topics that they are passionate about.
Some of my students love K-pop music, and as a result they are interested in learning more about Korea. Many of my students are avid soccer players, and are interested in learning more about the history and rules of the game. If I can provide books about the topics that my students care about, then I can ensure that all of my students are eager to read nonfiction.
In this book collection, I have sought a variety of nonfiction books so that all of my students are engaged in nonfiction research.
