Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are located in Ozone Park, Queens is part of the NYC Department of Education school system. We are a middle school that houses over 1900 hundred students. Over 60% of our students are of Hispanic decent. We currently are experiencing a large influx of students from Bangladesh (28% of our population is of Asian decent). 87% of our students receive free or reduced lunch.
Our students are respectful and hard working individuals.
They love to research and share videos on topics we are learning, however with the lack of technology in the building, it is often very challenging to do this. In our class, students love to have discussions and help their classmates who might be struggling.
My Project
In order to find solutions to some of today's worldly problems (lack of water in countries, alternative energy sources, etc) we need to be able to research our ideas. In order to be great researchers, we need to have the tools to research with. Currently, the only technology in our classroom is an older Macbook and a second generation iPad our teacher had laying around her house. We don't even have a projector for our teacher to share internet access with the whole class!!!
We try to make learning fun, but there's only so much fun one can create with a chalkboard!
It would be great to have a projector so we can share videos that relate to the topics we are learning in science and math and so our teacher can devise the "Smartboard" like lessons she knows will only engage us in the learning even more. It also would be great to ask a question and google the answer immediately.
We are expected to do project based learning yet have no tools for researching in the classroom. The Chromebooks would allow us to set up a research station in the classroom. Through our research, we hope to come up with solutions to some of the problems we face today (the environmental harms of fossil fuels, how to create energy to power objects in the school, and more!).
Please fund our project so that we do not fall further behind. Many of our classmates have limited experiences at home. It's not fair that they come to school and are being limited to what they can do/learn because of the lack of technology. Help us compete with our peers around the country, who have class sets of laptops and Smartboards in their classrooms.
