Research in the Biology Classroom: Spirulina Cultivation Project

Help me give my students the chance to grow spirulina in class! The material on this list, such as a pump and large mason jars, will be used to create an environment amenable for spirulina to grow.

My Project

The purpose of this project is to provide my AP Biology students the opportunity to do cutting-edge research at the end of the school year. In collaboration with an MIT graduate student, my students and I will be constructing a spirulina cultivation apparatus in order to cultivate spirulina in the classroom. Spirulina were first used by the Aztecs as an endurance-booster. It is considered a superfood — an all-in-one source of nutrients including protein levels comparable to eggs. Students will be testing different variables to enhance growth of spirulina. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to do hands-on experiments!
