My Project

Headphones have become a key part of the schooling experience, which should have been obvious with the rise in 1:1 computer ratio schools across the nation are striving for. They are essential for quiet testing environments, for building individual skills in math and reading, and to allow side by side research into deep topics during inquiry.

Inquiry research is what excites me most about this project.

My 4th graders have become adept at diving deep into questions about Native American history, natural sciences, and currently Black history. For those of you who are not aware of inquiry-based learning it is, most simply, questions, questions, questions. We discuss as a class how curious questioning across all subjects leads to the deepest learning. We generate questions together, research them both individually and collectively, and then present our information to each other. After we present our findings, the audience is invited to probe with more questions, sparking future inquiries. A lot of this research relies on learning what sources to trust and not trust on the internet and ranges from reading articles to watching video clips. You can imagine just how loud 21 computers watching different videos can get...

My hope is that these headphones will allow me to support students who are unable to bring their own in over the next several years. It would allow me to assign them to students on a year-to-year basis so that they can take more ownership over their technology use. It is surprising how easily shared headphones can break, even with very careful students. Thanks for reading and considering donating to my awesome current, and future students.
