Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the media specialist at a Pre-K - 5 public elementary school where the students are 55% Hispanic and 35% African-American, mostly financially disadvantaged. My goal is to bridge the educational gap between these minority students and those who have access to many resources. I am compiling a resource handbook for students to help them access information in a variety of formats to increase their information skills. One section will be on encyclopedias-what they are used for and how to use them. The same goes for dictionaries and atlases. I will also include sections on how to write a bibliography, how to look for information on the computers in the media center, good websites for various topics, models for how to conduct research, and many other topics. The end result will be a fantastic research tool tailored to the needs and curriculum units of study for the students at my school. The biggest need to carry out this project is paper. My school uses a lot of recycled paper, which will not be appropriate for this undertaking since having some pages in the handbook which have nothing to do with research will be very confusing to the students. These handbooks will be given to approximately 300 students. I promise this will be one of the most worthwhile projects that can be done to help students improve academically.
