This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are resilient, above anything else. Indeed they are hard working, thoughtful, kind, inquisitive, and curious. But those are second to their resilience. They battle to leave the baggage, that is far too much for any 14-year old to carry, outside of the classroom. They push to improve themselves and support their friends in doing the same. These inspire me on a daily basis.
The vast majority of my students survive in severe circumstances in terms of their socio-economic status.
Each year, we find that several of our students are living in a homeless shelter, and many are in the foster care system. School is their escape from harsh realities and their ticket to a brighter future.
My Project
I've been tasked with creating a brand new Research and Writing course for our 9th graders at the Bronx School for Law, Government, and Justice. Our 12th graders are enrolled in a year long thesis course that results in a 10-12 page research paper and presentation but they have struggled with this project year and year because their experience with foundational research skills is limited.
Because the school and community's resources are very limited, technology, namely laptops, are not available to our 9th grade students.
My students need a class set of laptops to work on research and writing in small groups. They'll support eachother in researching, writing, and peer editing. The 4 laptops I'm trying to fund with this project will support their learning in addition to the 3 desktops I was able to recover from a closed computer lab, and 3 older laptops I've recovered from a recently deceased family member.
