Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Over 95% of our school gets free lunches because they are low income, my students have only cellphones and no internet at home. Most of my students are in the Internationals Acadmey, supporting kids who just immigrated to the US in the last two years. Most students don't understand how to gather information from the internet. In my Algebra 1 final project, I hope to promote technological literacy in navigating the internet with an assessment of how they can mathematically model their research. We are interested in describing how the transformations from the parent graphs that we form from the different data they collect. Currently they older chromebooks that don't allow them to use any search engines other than Google, which does not allow me to teach them about navigating different data bases and search engines.

Bringing in just one computer to this financially struggling community, will allow them to have a few minutes each class to work as a group learning technological literacy and building researched mathematical models and present these findings like a newcast crew in short videos.

When I ask kids to research, they will ask me "Which app is that?" and I want to make sure we are fostering a sense of power and knowlege that will help them be active and educated members of their community. We don't need one computer for each kid, just one that they can regularly use together in small groups to see the differences between using their phones, the tablet Chromebooks and a laptop. Also, they'll see the difference between search engines. They will then record videos of themselves as though they are a news crew and solidify the claims they are making with the evidence they found. Tech and math literacy is crucial for a healthy democracy and successful lives.
