My students are amazing and resilient. Many are immigrants or from immigrant families. Many are affected by being homeless and neighborhood violence but come to school everyday ready to learn.
In a neighborhood where violence is an everyday part of life, school becomes so much more than just a place to learn.
The students in my classroom recognize the value of an education as a means to a positive future and hopefully, someday a safer community as well.
Our students are English Language Learners in an urban neighborhood. School is their safe haven and a place where they can focus on a positive future. They are eager to learn and take pride in the investment of others in their education.
As a part of our exploration of various literary themes, we are focusing on kindness. We are just finishing reading Wonder, and will continue reading other novels this year that focus on kindness and inclusion. We are arranging our entire literature curriculum this year around this theme. To help the students to further internalize this topic, we are also arranging field trips and guest speakers. I have had a request from students to create t-shirts using the quotes and ideas that they have learned through our studies. They want to let the whole school see their pride in becoming ambassadors of kindness. This project will give them ink and printable vinyl to use our classroom Cricut to bring their ideas to life.
