Representing All - A Culturally Responsive Library
Help me give my students books that represents the diversity of our classroom culture!
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Delmer's classroom raised $924
This project is fully funded
Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a loving and energetic group of kids, with a passion for learning. Our classroom is as diverse in cultures as we are in personalities, and have a large focus on building a sense of community. We are a Title I school, where 91% of students qualify for free-and-reduced lunch and 46% of students are considered English Language Learners. As a majority of my students come from low-income families, I must create an environment that is conducive to learning and give them the best shot at success!
My Project
Supporting our classroom with the funds for culturally responsive books will increase my students engagement during read aloud time, allow my students to identify with the characters, and have diverse learning opportunities. In whole group instruction, we will read these books as they are themed with the different heritage months, both during distance learning and while in the classroom.
My goal is to cultivate a library that represents the many different backgrounds in our classroom to increase student engagement, joy and enthusiasm around literacy!
Students will listen to the stories and participate in discussion about the comprehension of the story. For example, students will be asked to analyze the characters, make text to self, text to text, and text to world connections. This will support students understanding of historically accurate events along with their ability to make connections from the story to their own lives. These skills will help them become engaged readers, thinkers, citizens, and social activists.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
