This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

When you were a child and you listened to a read aloud, could you picture yourself in the story? Was the protagonist similar to you in some way? Did they look like you or come from a similar background? If you are like me, you saw representations of your culture, familial structure, race, and physical features in stories throughout your educational journey, and at varied levels, and this may have inspired your love of books. For my students, this is not a reality, yet. You have the power to help me change this.

My multilingual students are diverse in many ways.

They come to summer school with varied backgrounds, myriad levels of English proficiency,, and ready to learn English. Yet, the classroom library we have is not representative of their unique differences. Many of my classroom books are below grade level because the previous teacher felt as if teaching students English should be done mainly with the picture books you might find in lower elementary classes. And though picture books are a wonderful tool for teaching, students dislike when they are consistently provided books and materials that do not respect their sense of identity. Therefore, I am looking to expand our classroom library to include more age appropriate, diverse books so that my students can see themselves in stories and develop a love for reading and for English.

I believe that helping my students relate to books will help develop their language and literacy. Thank you for helping us build our library to better represent my students.
