Bullying is a problem that plagues most schools everyday. Being a special education teacher in a low income migrant district, presents many opportunities for bullying. My students are early childhood and although they may not recognize the problem but they do see differences, we are working to address this at the youngest stage of learning.
Representing differences through play, allows children to see differences and express emotions toward the differences in a safe environment.
Items like dolls with adaptive equipment, difference skin tones, and different accessories allows student to play in a natural way, while asking question like "why do they use this" or "why do they look different." Using the emotional toys and items, allow us to answer these questions and extend the conversation to express sympathy and empathy for others.
Our goal is use our class toys and room to stop bully before it every begins. We are working on children understanding differences and instead of tolerating them, accepting them. They can take this back into their community, as accepting peers to play at playgrounds, asking the hard questions repetitively, and showing others acceptance.
