My Students
Prior to last month, it had been roughly 18 months since I had last seen my students. So much has changed since we were last together not only inside of the classroom but outside of the classroom. It's safe to say that I'm excited to be able to welcome everyone back.
It's time to add more diverse books to our library collection.
The importance of representation for my students will allow them to see and reach their greatest potential. It will also provide them with examples of individuals, who look like them, and who are also agents of change. Located in Washington, D.C., our school is in an area where diversity is welcomed and encouraged. This year, I have all boys and I am terribly excited to see how well we will work together.
My Project
Each book in this project has been selected to address not only my students' academics but their social emotional learning as well. I want to affirm the greatness of my male students while also supplementing the curriculum with resources that our classroom library doesn't have.
The importance of representation at such a young age is important for all students, especially my students because they have not seen much of that in our curriculum as well as classroom library.
Black Boy Joy is a book that will celebrate Black boyhood in a way that my students will be able to relate to and appreciate. I am most excited about the book The Word Collector. It's about a boy named Jerome who begins to collect words which improves his love of reading. Also, he begins to share his knowledge of new words and vocabulary with this friends. At times my students may struggle with reading so this book, coupled with The Magical Yet, will assist them with a newer mindset for handling challenges.
To further affirm there position in the world and to remind them of their greatness, I also chose I Am Every Good Thing as well as Just Ask! Be Brave, Be Different, Be You. The resources in this project will not only boost self-esteem, but they will also promote a love of reading!
