Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The first grade students at our Title I school are a diverse group of language learners with many brand new to the country. One hundred percent receive free breakfast and lunch, but we are struggling to provide some of the other essential activities and supplies that we believe make for amazing and unforgettable school experiences.
Mastering key academic skills is urgent at our school, but so is nurturing and cultivating their curiosity and love of learning!
With a love of learning, all students are better equipped to learn.
My Project
To instill a lifelong joy of reading, I need diverse books that empower and validate my students by seeing themselves in the books they read. By building an inclusive classroom library that reflects the diverse cultures and perspectives of my students, I am not only teaching how important it is to respect and honor our differences, but I am able to show them through the books we read.
Diverse and inclusive books help to cultivate compassion, awareness, and understanding.
The best way to increase a student’s reading ability is through books that interest them and can connect to their personal experiences. My students are enthusiastic learners who are ready to take in new found knowledge in which to engage with each other and the world around them!
