My Students

Our school serves students in grades PreK-6 and provides rich academics, fantastic teachers, and a safe learning environment. Our school is Title I, meaning that the majority of our students come from low-income families. We serve many English Language Learners, students with special needs, and students living in poverty. Our school is also unique in that we have a significant refugee population, creating a wonderfully diverse atmosphere.

Despite their everyday challenges, our students are eager learners who love coming to school each day!

They are bright, inquisitive, kind and just a joy to teach! Their interests are as varied as their stories and that makes each day a new adventure!

My Project

The books we share with children have the power to mold and shape their worldview. Literature is a window into the lives and experiences of others, but can also help children see value in themselves.

According to Lee and Low Books, though people of color represent about 37% of the US population, just 13% of children’s books in the past 24 years include multicultural content.

As a teacher, this statistic is troubling. In such a connected and diverse world is it essential that the books in my classroom library represent not only my students, but those unlike them as well. This project will provide books that vary in level to ensure they meed the academic needs of my students, and also in the characters and life experiences of those characters. Representation matters!
