My students need a diverse selection of books to foster a deep love of reading and strengthen their literacy skills. These books were carefully selected to ensure all students feel represented in the classroom.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is a free K-8 public charter school located in Durham, North Carolina. We focus on rigorous academics and fostering individual development to build our scholars into well-rounded leaders prepared for high school, college, and the world beyond.
In the 2017-2018 school year, over 85% of our 640 students come from low-income backgrounds.
Our students are primarily African American and Latino, and we serve the third highest ESL population among charter schools in the state. As the 8th Grade ELA teacher, I want to ensure my students have access to a classroom library filled with diverse stories and characters.
My Project
The books I have chosen for this project are best sellers and culturally diverse in order to foster an interest in reading for all of my students. Whether it's poetry, comics, or novels, my new library will have something for everyone.
Graphic novels of popular, age-appropriate novels, such as A Wrinkle in Time and Black Panther, are engaging for reluctant and struggling readers.
Additionally, I have included books that incorporate a range of topics and themes that students deal with regularly: moving to a new country, fitting in, loss of a friend or family member, social and cultural acceptance, and more.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
