Representation Matters in School-Based Play Therapy

My Project

Talk therapy is a common tool in counseling. However, when working with young kids, it can be a less effective approach for processing feelings and dealing with trauma. So, how do you reach elementary-aged children, particularly those dealing with trauma or emotional regulation challenges?

You let them play!

In schools, this is known as school-based play counseling, an evidence-based practice using therapeutic play to help children develop self-esteem, self-control, and emotional regulation.

One tool used in school-based play counseling is a sand tray. Sand trays allow students to express their worldview via images and stories in the sand. The best practice is for there to be 300+ miniatures/figurines for students to be able to access when creating a sand tray. Ensuring you have people miniatures/figurines that represent your student population is critical for students to see themselves and their world truly.

The goal of this project is to create sand trays that have miniatures/figurines that represent the diverse student population at our school, and thus help the counselors at OSE better support students dealing with trauma or emotional regulation challenges.
