Representation Matters During Playtime

My Students

The kindergarten students in my classroom come from almost every continent in the world. Their diverse backgrounds bring unique perspectives and joy to our classroom. My students love learning through play and inquiry. They are curious problem solvers. I know that I am teaching global citizens that will one day change the world to make it a better place!

My Project

The materials we have in our classrooms can send unintentional messages of who belongs and who does not. While shopping for human figurines to add to our playtime, I am finding many places only sell sets of white people. That would only represent about 1/4 of the students in my classroom. It is important that my students see themselves reflected in the materials in our classroom. I found a company that makes a set with a large range of skin colors and body abilities.

Imaginative play is how kindergartners learn about the world around them.

By using these figurines, they will be able to see themselves reflected in their play. These kinds of materials give students confidence and the knowledge that they belong, are seen, and matter. They will use them in our block area when they build homes together. They will use them during writing time to act out their story before writing. These materials will send an important message to our students that all are welcome here.
