Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is a public, Title I funded, charter school where all students receive free breakfast and lunch. We are located in a small, urban community. Many of our students come from diverse backgrounds and we have a high percentage of students from military families. Our school is a place where children are empowered to become the best learners they can be, with teachers and staff who make them feel safe, comfortable, and welcomed each and every day.
In many urban communities, students are not provided with the same tools, materials, and experiences found in more affluent areas.
My first graders are creative, loving, and—most importantly—unstoppable in their quest to be successful. Their families sought out our public charter school and put their most valuable, young people in my classroom. The parents are confident in my abilities as a teacher and with these new partnerships and community connections, I enter my room every day more prepared and driven to provide a meaningful learning experience.
My Project
As a little girl, visiting the library or the bookstore was my favorite pastime. Not because I never had access to books, but it was the only time I had books I could connect to at my fingertips. Literature was a luxury to me, a currency that in my eyes was a rich experience.
I strive to recreate that dream in my classroom, with books that represent the identities and interests of my students, so that accessing books isn't a dream, but a reality.
Students deserve to be able to open a book, and see representations of them dancing throughout the pages. They should read heartwarming stories about characters, just like them, who are brave, victorious, loved, magnificent, and capable.
