Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school subscribes to holistic view of our students and employs an integrated focus on academics, socio-emotional supports, and family engagement activities that lead not only to improved student learning, but also to stronger families and healthier communities. My students come from multicultural backgrounds(Black, Latino, Indian, Vietnamese) with a wide variance in academic proficiency (IEPs, speech services, reading recovery, etc.), as well as mastery of the socio-emotional skills critical for school success. Also, 100% of them receive free or reduced-priced lunch.
Despite the challenges they face in school, in their communities, and in the world at large my students come to school everyday with immense resilience, dedication, innovation, empathy, and a sense of humor.
As I watch these young humans make sense of the world they inspire me daily to persevere and challenge myself to be a better teacher for them. I could not be happier with school and students that I serve.
My Project
My classroom is made up of 100% students of color who come from low income communities. Half of my class is reading a year to 2 years behind grade level. One of the best ways to increase student reading levels is to practice reading as much as possible. Unfortunately, most of my books have been donated by previous teachers so they are outdated, irrelevant, and destroyed.
My students deserve quality books with characters that represent them and the real world realities they face.
With these new titles, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level. It is important that I give my students access to new and engaging books to increase excitement for reading and decrease frustration.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
