The students in my classroom are eager learners who see the value of taking what they learn in the classroom and applying it to their daily lives and communities. Last school year, my majority Latino students were very interested in the role of the President and what he is or is not allowed to do. Through using our history books and Newsela to incorporate current events, my students would frequently come in excited to tell me that they had discussed what we learned about the government with their parents and even taught them a thing or two. In addition, my students were selected to help beautify the school by taking a small piece of land near the recess area and transforming it into a beautiful garden! To watch them discover that there is beauty in all things, as long as they are given love and attention was something truly magical.
My students face challenges that I never did as a child, and for that I truly admire their ability to come in and allow me to help them create experiences that fill their minds with possibilities!
This year i'm looking forward to continue having amazing experiences!
In my classroom of majority Latinx students, having books that feature characters who look like them is extremely important! Feeling represented in literature helps students gain confidence and to feel empowered, which are necessary for a happy and healthy classroom environment.
Today, many Latinx students across the country are struggling to find where they fit in, and simply having a few books featuring Latinx folks who have made a difference or ideas about fighting for what is right are classroom necessities.
In addition, finding books that are engaging for my students that they are excited to bring home is important for the language development of ELL students. Including a few fun novels that I know my students love in this project will help their reading skills immensely!
