We have a dynamic community of students and families. There is an ongoing influx of refugees coming into this low-income community every year from refugee camps in Africa, Asia and East Europe with no prior formal education. The K-8 charter is a little over 10 years old and was created by parents, most of whom were refugees from war-torn Somalia. These concerned parents wanted to provide a safe and welcoming learning environment where their children could thrive and their culture be elevated.
My Project
Your generous donation to my project will help me to provide my students with culturally diverse books that will reflect the culture and interests of my students.
As a black educator, I know the importance of representation and how it shapes how we see ourselves.
When students see themselves or relate to what they're reading, they become activated and engaged. This helps them to become strong, independent readers and writers, while promoting a positive and greater sense of self.
During distance learning, students will be able to take check out books and take them home.
