Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Families, students, and staff feel welcomed, connected, and a sense of belonging when they are in environments that are representative of their cultural, ethnic, racial, and language backgrounds. My goal for this project is to obtain diverse, inclusive, identity-affirming books, games, visuals, and sensory tools that meet the diverse learning needs of students and support students in feeling seen, heard, and valued.
Our students are smart, resilient, and hardworking children and teens from predominately Hispanic/ Latinx background enrolled in general and special education classroom settings.
The bilingual social and emotional learning books foster inclusivity, understanding, and empathy in children and celebrate diversity. The books offer engaging narratives and interactive activities that make learning about kindness, immigration, respect, and identity fun and meaningful. The world map and signage welcome students to the counseling space by embracing their background, offering motivational messages in Spanish by influential Hispanic and Latinx figures that represent the cultural, ethnic, and linguistic diversity of our school community. The doll house, multicultural families toy figures, and sand tray offer children the opportunity to practice sharing, turn taking, and making friends, with toys that look like students and the members of their family. The wobble chairs accommodate different learning needs and preferences for students that need to move and access greater range of movement while seated.
