My students need granola bars for breakfast and as snacks throughout the day. The other items are things I usually have stocked in my classroom, but am not financially able to replenish right now.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine being an adolescent and leaving your family and country to make the journey to the US because your life has been threatened and you are fleeing violence. Making the dangerous journey alone, you experience violence and often sexual assault. Then you are detained as an unaccompanied minor and begin the legal process to obtain political asylum status. You didn't have much schooling after 6th grade because your family couldn't afford it or you had interrupted schooling throughout your life. Now, as immigrants, you must struggle to survive in a foreign language and school. This is the reality of the resilient newcomer students that I have been teaching since February 2015.
My students risked their lives for the "American Dream" and I want to provide them with all the opportunities possible to become their best self and achieve their dreams here.
These immigrant youth want to be successful students and be able to contribute to their families and communities. And while our country is polarized around immigration, I think we can agree that all young people deserve a safe community to grow up in and an education that allows them to develop their abilities and reach their potential.
My Project
My classroom is usually stocked with basic necessities for students like pencils, tissues, hand wipes, and hand sanitizer, but I have run out of these items. I have a water cooler and hot chocolate and tea available for students, but I need more cups and wooden stir sticks. Many students also eat lunch in my classroom. Whether they bring their own food or share with friends, they often need plates, cups, napkins and forks, which I usually have, but currently need more of.
The granola bars will be available for students that didn't get breakfast or need a snack later in the day.
Eating breakfast is important so that students can start the day off with energy and be able to focus in class.
