Creativity, imagination, problem solving and collaboration are key components to authentic learning in our classroom. I have high expectations for every student. It is my responsibility to provide a variety of learning opportunities to help each child meet or exceed their goals. Our school is a K-2 school with approximately 1,100 children enrolled.
We have a diverse population of ethnic backgrounds, a growing ELL population, a high percentage of students who need accelerated learning opportunities, and students who need reading and math interventions to help them establish a firm foundation for successful learning.
My Project
After visiting the Ron Clark Academy last spring (thanks to DonorsChoose.org), I learned some new and engaging teaching methods to motivate my second grade students. One of my biggest takeaways was learning about room transformations. I have already taught reading, writing, math and phonics lessons through transforming our classroom as a Glow Room using black lights and consumable glow-in-the-dark supplies.
We had Text Feature Surgery Day, and my second graders wore gloves, surgery gowns and caps and became surgeons for the day as they creatively completed engaging learning activities.
The students love these lessons, but to teach them, I need to replenish the materials each year to continue the activities.
The lanyards and pencil pouches will be used to help them stay organized throughout the year. The batteries are needed to continue using our Boogie Boards that were donated through DonorsChoose.org a few years ago.
I would love to have the wooden lap desks for students to have a choice in seating on the floor yet have a comfortable work space. They can also use these desks during transformations or station rotations.
