The three green lap desks are used primarily for students to work together on foundation of literacy spelling activities. Students enjoy using these flexible seating options rather than sitting at their desk. It was a wonderful addition to the classroom. The stools are lightweight and easy for students to move without the risk of pinched fingers from the heavy chairs we previously used.\r\n\r\nI've also organized our Reading Workshop activities on the aqua paper trays for students to gather work to complete while I meet with small reading groups.\r\n\r\nSince our classroom has a beach theme, our mascot is a sea turtle named Maho. My second graders were thrilled to adopt their own plush sea turtles to use as reading buddies at home! Each student filled out an adoption application and received a certificate to name and officially adopt their turtle. Parents have already shared wonderful feedback, telling me how much their child enjoys reading aloud each night to the turtle. We even started a reading wall where students post pictures of themselves reading in their pajamas with the turtles. \r\n\r\nThank you so much for your generosity! The six chairs have been a big hit. We decided to share the chairs by assigning them to six students daily and rotating them throughout the week. This allows students to have a chair for the day at least once or twice a week. Students may bring the chairs to other room areas throughout the day to make it flexible. The carpet in our book nook makes a comfortable spot for students to sit on the floor with cushions to read our complete group assignments. \r\n\r\nThere was a lot of excitement when the students first saw the chairs and rug. They couldn't wait to try them out. They love earning pom poms and they save them up each week and get so excited to be able to use them to \"buy\" things they want from the fuzzy store. The magnetic book shelves hold all of our favorite books we read during read alouds. We got to watch 12 eggs grow into 10 chickens and the students absolutely loved the opportunity and experience. We began with 12 eggs on April 4th and the chickens were supposed to hatch April 25th. We came to school on April 23rd and 6 chickens hatched! We got to witness 3 more chickens hatching that same day. Then the next day, another chicken hatched. We took care of the chicks for a week and then they went back to their farm! \r\nYour funding of this grant provided an experience my students will never forget.
