My Students

My students are all English Language Learners, new to this country within the last two to three years. From Guatemala, Vietnam, Yemen, Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and the Philippines, they are enrolled in my "Newcomer" class for one period a day. They join their English fluent peers for six other courses.

My newcomer students are eager scholars even as they deal with poverty, immigration difficulties, separation from family/friends, violence and PTSD.

They work hard in class but often struggle to stay focused for a variety of reasons. They are less likely to have parents who can help them in the evenings with schoolwork due to language barriers and/or work schedules. They may be working full-time jobs themselves and sleeping very little at night. In some cases, my students have no adult at home because they are in America unaccompanied.

My Project

An earlier Donors Choose project this year was fully funded and fully enjoyed by students in my English Language Development class. I chose to use the snacks provided by donors to start a student rewards store so that students could use classroom "cash" -- earned for good behavior or reaching academic milestones -- to purchase snacks whenever they are hungry in my class. It has worked beautifully! So beautifully that we need to replenish our store for second semester.

Snacks that students purchase with "classroom cash" contribute to a very healthy and positive climate in my classroom.

Some students who would rather be taking a different elective than the required English Language Development class feel better about being in my class. Those who do love ELD love it more because they can focus on a nourished belly. And those who need more help at lunchtime, can earn free snacks so they don't go hungry just because they wanted extra support. Lastly, many students in my afternoon classes get reenergized after lunch when they can snack on a Kind bar, fruit snacks or pretzels.

This snack program tied to rewards for positive behavior and achievement has truly revolutionized my classroom!
