Our classroom motto is "Stay Curious". Our biology classroom can constantly be found abuzz with questions and discussions, "Why" and "How" are used in all aspects of inquiry and encouraged beyond the science department. Our school community fosters this curiosity within each of our students, placing a strong emphasis in the arts and sciences, which creates an incredibly unique student body. Any and all students are able to attend our school, which is application-based but lottery-drawn. Due to this application process, our students are from all districts and demographics within the area. This diversity allows for classroom dynamics that encourage peer-learning, skill-building, reflection upon personal ideas and experiences, as well as facilitating an appreciation of differences and commonalities.
In our biology classroom, students may be using a microscope for the first time or finely developing their electrophoresis skills.
We approach the living world through many facets which emphasize relating previous experiences toward a greater depth of knowledge. By encouraging my students to develop their own understanding of their cellular, genetic and ecological processes they are able to make informed decisions that affect our local and global community.
My Project
Throughout our Biology class, we develop crucial science and engineering practices as outlined by the Next Generation Science Standards. Students are utilizing hands-on manipulation and design weekly, which requires several supplies to be available for their use. In our Biology class, we cover core ideas such as molecules, cell organelles, photosynthesis and DNA structure that benefit from the construction of a larger model or explanation.
By constructing their own models, students are able to visualize biological concepts and mechanisms as well as develop their own understanding.
Our classroom "Creative Corner" contains model supplies that are available for students to use as well as manufactured kits. Several of our model supplies need to be replaced so students can continue to construct hand-on models of processes that are sometimes difficult to grasp. When we review Mitosis and Meiosis Play-Doh is used to model the cell division and crossing over. Students utilize chenille pipe cleaners and beads to construct a model of DNA and then create a short video film explaining the components and structure. Laminated paper models are used to demonstrate the process of DNA replication, transcription and translation. "Genetic codes" or genes are created with these models and lettered beads could engage students to generate their own genetic sequences. Our "Creative Corner" provides these resources so students can select their materials and fabricate their own models. It would also be beneficial to have these supplies organized and available for students during the lessons we cover. The storage tubs and zipper pouches requested will make assist classroom efficiency. The construction and craft supplies requested will not only assist their model construction but also provide materials to replenish kits that have received normal wear and tear.
