Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are Intelligent, engaged, passionate learners. Where they are given room to explore ideas in their reading, writing and research, they flourish! Many are at a special turning point where they are asking “Why?” And looking at the world and their inner selves for the answers. A traditional education doesn’t normally support this search, but I find that self-selected books help. Reading about people with both similar and different experiences, and finding truths in fiction often interrupt expectations because they create questions that lead to more questions. This search is vital.

My students are developing their interests and passions in a way that will take them beyond the classroom after high school.

They are interested in the world at large, and in social justice. They want to know how to make the world a better place.

My Project

My school's book room is full of wonderful books; however, it does not match the diversity of the population it is meant to serve. In my class, we read every day and students get to choose their own books for most of the year. I want to expand my classroom library to reflect the racial, cultural, and gender diversity represented in my classroom.

Representative materials in the classroom must become the new norm.

When students, especially new or struggling readers, don't immediately relate to a text, they rarely finish it. I want my students to see themselves in the writers and characters available in my classroom. I want them to be able to read the stories of people who look or live like them. Many of my students proclaim to not be readers or to not like to read. Because those stories are just as important. As with most people at the beginning of their reading journey, they want to read stories they can relate to in some way.

Classics are great, but many of my students struggle to engage with a story when the world in it is so far removed from their own experience. As readers grow, so does their reading world expand. They'll be into the classics soon enough - if they want to! But most importantly, they will become lifelong readers because they learn to enjoy reading.
