My students need athletic materials to replace equipment lost during Hurricane Harvey. Track and Field season is about to start and team bags, batons, discus' and shot puts will help get us ready.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The school district I have been working for the past year was taken over by the state and a neighboring school district took over afterwards. We are a Title 1 school and the majority of students are on free or reduced lunch. There are no after school sports organizations in the community so most of my athletes rely on physical education and team sports. After Hurricane Harvey, we had no usable equipment and we had to relocate to the high school where it is now 5th-12th grade.
My Project
Our students depend on school athletics to provide them with opportunities to improve their physical fitness and create exposure to various sports.
For many of them, sports provides the incentive to excel in the classroom and forms the bridge for their learning.
Track season is fast approaching and we have no supplies to start the season. Discus, shot puts and batons are basic track items that my students need to learn the sport.
Furthermore basketball season has been a struggle with minimal equipment. We do not have enough basketballs to have a productive practice or work on training and drills with our athletes. Our students carry shoes and clothes in plastic grocery bags, replacing team bags will put them on equal ground with other fully outfitted teams.
