My Project

A thoughtfully restructured classroom environment can significantly enhance student engagement and learning outcomes in high schools serving low-income and English Language Learner populations. By incorporating accessible shelving for community-building games, students can independently select activities that will help them develop essential language skills through collaborative play. These games build classroom community by creating opportunities for peer-to-peer interaction in a low-pressure setting, allowing ELL students to practice language skills while fostering relationships across language barriers. Additionally, a designated storage locker for cell phones reduces distractions and allows for all students to fully immerse themselves in the learning experience without digital interruptions.

When games and community-building activities are visibly displayed on shelves rather than hidden away in cabinets and cell phones are locked away, it signals that social-emotional learning and relationship development are priorities alongside academic achievement.

The cell phone storage solution acknowledges the reality of technology in students' lives while creating clear boundaries for appropriate use, teaching valuable self-regulation skills particularly important for students navigating challenging socioeconomic circumstances. Together, these thoughtful modifications transform the classroom into a more supportive environment where all students can develop both academic skills and the social-emotional competencies essential for long-term success.
