Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a great bunch. It's always a mix of abilities and personalities. As a teacher, you'll get students who are overachievers, can-doers, and the less than ambitious kind. Regardless of the students' caliber, a teacher always asks the best out of them. This is why teaching art is a great way for all students to show what they can do.
My students come from a community that has one of the highest poverty levels and almost 100% of my students qualify for free or reduced-rate lunches.
I also have a large ESL presence which makes teaching a bit more difficult. My students push through many obstacles and many times endure broken air conditioners and lack of funds for proper materials.
My students are not fancy, overbearing, or have a chip on their shoulders. They have a willingness to try and do their best regardless of their socioeconomic status. My students have a funny way of thinking about things. One example is when students who do remarkably well think their work is subpar. This is when I say their work is beautiful. They disagree and keep working on it and sometimes start over.
My Project
The students will learn a lot of skills to create a banner. We will spend time learning how to create letters by hand using a lettering guide. Students will create a banner consisting of a name to be placed on a large rectangular sheet of paper. Students will also learn techniques that will help them paint letters with accuracy. To supplement the painted letters, students will select 3 images that reflect their personalities and incorporate them with the letters.
Students will use Prismacolor color pencils which are very creamy and practice various rendering and blending techniques.
The project submitted also shows extra white pencils because it is vital for the smooth blending of the images. Doing the images with the color pencils teaches the students about light, shadow, color theory, and rendering. These are tough things to learn and students find it difficult to believe the results after some effort.
