Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year, our high school is hosting its annual College Decision Day, an event prompted every year by former First Lady Michelle Obama. This celebrates and rewards our graduating seniors who have made the commitment to attend college (4-year university or community college) or have enlisted to serve our country in the armed forces.
This celebration is more than a banquet for our students; rather, it's a moment to recognize and commend the hard work and adversity these students faced inside and outside of school.
85% of our students are students of color, and about 70% of our school's students identify as coming from a low-income family- our students face infinite barriers to academic success. However, due to their hard work and fierce dedication, every graduating senior will be enrolled in college Fall of 2024.
Books for their classes can get expensive, which is why tablets are the perfect solutions. We want to encourage students to rent textbooks via their tablets and technology to help them save money! Since the majority of our students experience financial insecurity, we are asking for more personal materials, such as blankets, socks, backpacks, water filters, blenders, and shower caddy's, to ensure they don't need to worry about not having basic health needs met (such as clothing, warmth, and clean water) and can instead focus on attendance and learning. We are also asking for other school-related items, such as printers, headphones, and a speaker to make sure they are able to complete their school work in a timely manner with their own materials.
