it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Special needs students from a low-income neighborhood in the South Bronx, New York receive therapy services in the local public school. We serve students in Pre-K through 5th grade.
My students have impairments with balance, motor coordination, muscle weakness, and delays in visual perceptual skills to name a few.
Our students with various diagnoses including autism, ADHD, sensory processing disorder, and apraxia, require occupational, physical, and speech therapy services to help them access the school environment and curriculum to their fullest potential.
My Project
Due to COVID and the economic hardship New York City is facing, our funding for the 2020-2021 school year has been cut substantially. We will no longer receive any money to buy supplies to use for therapy sessions with our special students. Remote learning has been challenging. It was my priority to get my low-income students supplies to participate in sessions. Now my goal is for my students to view how to use the supplies through use of a phone stand and light. The stand and light would allow my students to watch me break down tasks into steps that they can follow along. A desk mat will provide a visually clear background with high contrast for the table-top crafts and activities for my students with visual impairments. The remaining supplies will be used in our video sessions to facilitate hand strengthening, coordination, visual tracking, and so on.
