My Students

My students are curious, talkative and energetic sixth-graders who range in age from 10-13 years old. They come from all socioeconomic levels and ethnic backgrounds. My school is a Title I school, which results from having a large percentage of students on free or reduced-price meals. We have a large population of military dependents since we are located near a military installation. Many students say goodbye to their parent for six months at a time while they are serving on deployment overseas. We serve learning disabled students in a non-restrictive environment and encourage regular placement when possible.

While students face many challenges at school and at home, they are eager to participate in hands-on science activities no matter how simple or complicated.

Their conversations are centered around making the activity a success and monitoring each other's behavior. It is a perfect blending of appropriate social interaction and verbally processing science material.

My Project

Students need to visualize diagrams, cycles, flow charts, and important information as they are learning science remotely. One way is to draw and discuss the concept on the whiteboard easel while reading and taking notes online.

I will draw on the easel while we are in the online classroom together.

Students will understand an energy pyramid better when they can view it being constructed. Producers, consumers, and decomposers will be added to it, using student suggestions.

The students will view the illustration or diagram I create on the easel while we are discussing the concepts and make connections to their learning. They will also participate in what goes on the illustrations by suggesting ideas.
