I have a small group of students with large hearts of gold. They are always excited and eager to learn, despite any intellectual or physical obstacles that get in their way. They view the world as friendly and optimistic and have amazing senses of humor. They have what this world needs right now: a positive outlook given the cards they've been dealt.
They come from a large urban community which has recently been deemed a coronavirus "hotspot." Keeping a classroom routine and some sort of structure in place is crucial not only for learning but for their social and emotional well-being.
Online learning is hard for them as they have learning delays. Many have families that are still working, and they may have only one electronic device to share with multiple siblings or have no internet access at all.
My Project
I became a teacher for the sole purpose of wanting to make a positive impact in the life of a child. To me, my students are my chosen family. We spend three years together, and I love watching them learn and grow into amazing young adults.
The normal way of life isn't easy for them, yet they approach it head on with smiles on their faces.
Now with this "new normal" of remote learning, I want to be there for them even more, even if we are alone together.
With the entire world full of disruption, I want my students to have stability so they can continue to expand their minds and learn the way they know how. I want to provide them with non-screen time and hands-on activities that they can do independently to build their confidence and reduce stress of their families at home.
I have found great materials such as sorting games, erasable tracing workbooks to practice numbers and letters, fidget toys to help them stay calm when their anxieties are high, and art supplies for their creative minds
