Remote Learning Bugs Me. Bugs Will Bring Us Together!
Help me give my students arthropods and choice chambers so they can return from remote learning to do hands-on ethology experiments and to learn animal care.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students come from every corner of the world. My students are all English Language Learners (ELLs), and are a microcosm of Queens: they speak over a dozen languages and come from more than 20 countries. Each has a unique story to tell, but often, they have not yet mastered enough of the English language to share it. I love teaching them science because it is a common language we can see and touch through living creatures and experiments.
During the height of New York's infections in spring 2020, our school and their families were hit the hardest of any area in the country: Several staff and many students were infected.
We lost a staff member, and many students lost family to COVID-19. As the pandemic wanes, we all look forward to the day we will be back together in the same room.
My Project
This fall, it is widely expected we will be back in our classrooms at long last. Many students will have been out of a real classroom for almost 18 months. In all that time, it is unlikely they have had their hands on the living creatures we study in biology. I want to welcome them back to in-school learning with experiments they can touch and that will broaden their idea of their own capabilities. Working with small creatures is easy and many students don't know they can do it!
Students will use these arthropods and supplies to observe and care for real live creatures.
They will be able to plan humane experiments to better get to know these millipedes, pillbugs, and sowbugs, and through collaboration get to know one another. It is critical that my students have shared experiences to discuss and to help them learn the languages of science and English. Planning experiments and asking questions together, they will have plenty to capture their wonder and to talk about.
Without you, we won't have these creatures to welcome our return to in-class learning. Please make our return to school this fall unforgettable and meaningful by donating "bugs" to be our partners in learning.
