it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For the last several years my third grade classes in New York have received a year's worth of Weekly Reader magazines. The first year I paid for it myself and in the last few years generous DonorsChoose sponsors have provided my students with this affordable and dependably entertaining publication. It has become an integral part of my weekly literacy centers. If you are not familiar with the Weekly Reader, which you may perhaps remember from your own childhood, let me fill you in on the many ways it has proved valuable to my students:
1. It is written on grade level, so it easy for most kids to read and/or follow along.
2. It is engaging. The subject matter is timely and the photos and illustrations grab the attention of young readers, reinforcing the all-important idea that reading can be fun.
3. The kids get to keep it. This may not seem like a big deal, but most of my students do not have a lot, and they actually get very excited at the prospect of getting to keep even a simple four page magazine. For the ones who keep every issue, it becomes a part of their home library. For kids who complete their weekly work and are interested, I give them a binder to store their issues.
4. It provides a special focus on social studies, current events and science, areas that tend to get short shift in the current educational climate, with it's heavy focus on reading and math programs.
5. It comes with a number of interesting educational supplements, including posters, challenging extension activities related to each issue and appropriate third grade test prep materials. (Third grade in New York State is the first testing year, so these materials are particularly important.)
As a teacher I often and willingly spend my own money on my kids, but my resources are limited. It would be a great to be able to order another year of Weekly Reader for my class. In addition, I am often able to pass some copies along and/or swap materials with my colleagues, so the magazines get plenty of use. Coming as it does, week after week, this magazine represents one of the best and most affordable educational products available in the marketplace. Thank you for your consideration.
