My Project

I’d love to get a class set of Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt for my students. I will be teaching both on-level 9th Grade Literature and Composition as well as AP Liferature, and this novel will be used for both. This book is full of heart and touches on universal themes pertaining to grief, identity, found family, and unexpected friendship—all of which, I expect, will spark thoughtful discussion and personal reflection among my students. Ideally, this novel is written in a way that’s both accessible and rich in literary elements, making it perfect for all of my students, regardless of their reading level.

Many of my students come from lower-income households.

Having a class set would ensure everyone can participate in our novel study without adding additional strain to my students’ parents.

As an English teacher, I frequently think about Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop’s metaphor in which she compares books to windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors — books are mirrors when they reflect students’ own experiences and identities, windows when they offer views into lives and cultures different from their own, and doors when they open pathways to new worlds and ideas. The reason I’ve chosen this particular novel is very much based on this idea; the characters are quirky, flawed, and above all, just so deeply human — they are characters to which my students will relate and, maybe for the first time, will allow students to see themselves reflected in their ELA curriculum.

I am so confident that, with your help, my students will gain so much from Remarkably Bright Creatures! Please consider helping me to make this a reality so my students can learn from it, grow from if, and remember it for a long time to come.
