My Students

"Ms.,I hate reading." I hear this sentence every new semester, from nearly every student in my Resource English 2 Class. This semester, I hooked them with an awkward retelling of a first kiss and want to keep the momentum going. The Hunger Games is compelling and will encourage reluctant readers

These are kids with reading and writing difficulties.

They have tried and failed so many times it simply isn't worth trying anymore. My philosophy is to encourage them to read. ANYTHING. Reading and writing are basic components of functioning in our society, and I would love my students to realize it doesn't have to be a chore. I hook my students early by reading to them an account of a first kiss. It is awkward and embarrassing for the reader, and as a result they want to read a little more. My goal this year is to find more engaging stories that will finally encourage my students to read for pleasure. The Hunger Games is that book. It has action, adventure, rebellion, fighting, and heartache. It is a book that works alongside with our society's obsession with reality shows. Students who have taught themselves it isn't worth it to read need something besides the expected and the ordinary. They need a jolt.

My Project

Students with significant special needs tend to give up on success in reading by the time they reach high school. Their struggles have robbed them of the joy of learning, of the opportunity to get lost in a book, of the simple enjoyment of reading itself. I want to use The Hunger Games to reignite the love of learning they had when they were small. The Hunger Games is relevant in a variety of ways and is easy to make authentic given our current information hungry society. We need to know everything, about everyone, NOW. The Hunger Games novel takes all of those desires and reality shows to the extreme. Its heroine is a fighter, a survivor. She has faced hardship and continues to fight to live. Reluctant Readers aren't unlike Katniss. I would love to use this book to ignite a fire in my students. I want to encourage imagination and exploration in ways they have not experienced in an English class. They deserve the opportunity for success.

Reluctant readers have been robbed of many things.

Many of them have given up and are going through the motions of school. This project has the potential to make a connection with them in a way that Julius Caesar cannot. It can give them the ability to read, comprehend, and expand their higher order thinking skills with a book to which they can relate. Those are rewards they will appreciate later in life. Right now, they will regain an appreciation for reading, and a true chance for success
