These are kids with reading and writing difficulties. They have tried and failed so many times it simply isn't worth trying anymore. My philosophy is to encourage them to read. ANYTHING. Reading and writing are basic components of functioning in our society, and I would love my students to realize it doesn't have to be a chore. I hook my students early by reading to them an account of a first kiss. It is awkward and embarrassing for the reader, and as a result they want to read a little more. My goal this year is to find more engaging stories that will finally encourage my students to read for pleasure. The Hunger Games is that book. It has action, adventure, rebellion, fighting, and heartache. It is a book that works alongside with our society's obsession with reality shows. Students who have taught themselves it isn't worth it to read need something besides the expected and the ordinary. They need a jolt.
