Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have 31 students, all of which are in a low-income/high poverty school district. My students' parents are very hard working proud parents that want a better education for their children. Many of my families attended this school themselves and feel a strong connection to the school community. My student' parents and I share a common goal which is to instill a love of reading. However, many of my families can't afford all the chapter books that I want to expose them to. I have students in my class who love reading chapter books and students who have never really read many chapter books and are curious to start, but don't know where to begin.
This is where I want to help them by having classroom sets of books that we read together and have discussions about life lessons, comprehension strategies, vocabulary, symbolism, historical connections, and community building.
Books that they find interesting to hook their engagement and teach through those mediums. Increasing my library of classroom sets will help me reach more students that I can teach the love of literacy through chapter books.
My Project
These chapter books about specific historical people and events are tools I use to make history real for my students.
The books we get will be used in literature circles where they learn how to evaluate the book and the authors purpose and perspective.
They learn there are two sides to a story and we must be responsible to look at all sides before making a decision of where we stand. We dive into character developments, settings, what if scenarios, as well as cause/effect scenarios on proceeding historical periods in time.
This process is where we connect their Literacy to the process of writing. Students will learn how to take what they learn and put it in words. They will create research, opinion, and persuasive literature using their Chromebooks. When we open one of these books, we dive into personal accounts in history. This allows these time periods for my students to become relevant and tangible.
