My Project
At my inclusion Title I school, the joy of getting lost in a book isn't the reality for many of my high school students who are juggling academic, social, familial, and societal pressures and responsibilities.
My students are brilliant Black and Brown teenagers who are not used to seeing themselves, and their lived experiences, affirmed in the curriculum they are learning, and books they are reading.
With incessant focus on standardized assessments, sometimes reading and writing can become more of a chore, or means to an end, instead of an opportunity for exploration, imagination, creation, and affirmation.
By providing relevant reading options that intentionally consider them and their interests, reading will become an impactful outlet for my students, while changing how they see themselves and the world.
