This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This school year I co-teach in an ICT classroom with 25 students of all learning abilities. I teach in a Title I school in a classroom that lost everything to a fire last year. All materials were lost and the students learned to be very resilient. The students come from diverse backgrounds.
My students are enjoying learning to read and would benefit from engaging texts that they can see themselves in.
I have a motivated group of students who are really proud of their reading skills. Many students do not have access to books on their level at home.
My Project
I am so proud to say that this year I have several students that are reading either slightly below or on grade level. It is definitely in part due to the books they are reading. I have been borrowing books that are culturally and socially relevant. The books are much more exciting than the dated books I have in my classroom now. Students love to read books that feel almost like chapter books.
I am also asking for read aloud texts that have characters that my students can relate to.
I teach in a population with students of many skin colors and diverse backgrounds. The texts I have currently do not reflect this. I want my students to feel proud of themselves and their families. By hearing stories that relate to their lives and experiences, they can feel proud of who they are.
