Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My mission every year is to teach knowledge and skills, nurture confidence and character, and inspire the passion needed for students to achieve their goals, excel in the competitive world, and positively impact the community. My elementary students work hard and are eager to learn. They come from our diverse community, with over 75% qualifying for free or reduced price lunch.
As 82% of my students are children of color, I feel responsible to provide equitable opportunities to them to ensure that they have access to all the resources they need to reach their full potentials.
I have witnessed the challenges of distance learning for my students during the COVID-19 pandemic, and I want to ensure that they have equal access to the resources they need at home in order to continue their growth during this year.
My Project
I am requesting literature circle books that reflect the issues that my students are going through as they prepare to go into middle school: friendship, family, loss, bullying, growing up, acceptance, and identity.
My students have matured into readers who are able to pull out deep themes from literature that relate to their own lives.
The moments in class where we have read and discussed diverse literature in our class have led to some of the richest conversations I've ever heard from 10 and 11-year olds. Students will make connections to the texts and to each other, and I see them growing not just in their analytical thinking skills, but in their socio-emotional skills as well.
Thank you for supporting us in buying more sets of books so that students can read and hold literature circles in small groups. The books I have selected deal with issues that will expand students' worldview in age-appropriate stories, highlighting issues of race, immigration, poverty, gender identity, and diverse family backgrounds.
